In 2024, nursing homes and other skilled care facilities in Minnesota are estimated to cost an average of $9,526 per month!
The state offers aid to those in need through Medical Assistance but there are strict income guidelines and asset guidelines that must be met in order to qualify. So, its only after you've spent nearly everything you have, leaving you with nothing to supplement your care or give to your children or other dependents when you are gone, that you can qualify for help.
There used to be an easy way around medical assistance guidelines, you could gift all your assets away to children etc. but the rules have changed. Now, everything you gift away counts against you and makes you ineligible to receive assistance for a certain number of months, depending on the amount that was gifted.
